Graduate Program in Genetics

The Committee on Genetics is an interdisciplinary academic unit, providing support to the study of genetics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Committee is committed to taking an interdisciplinary approach in the teaching and research training of geneticists, by bringing together a wide range of basic science and clinical geneticists from sixteen academic departments throughout the University of Chicago.

The Genetics doctoral program resides in the Committee on Genetics at the University of Chicago. The Committee's goal for the doctoral program is to provide an intellectually stimulating, collegial, and supportive environment for students to progress smoothly from research training to research independence. We provide an exciting environment in which to pursue rigorous, high quality training with flexibility in designing programs to meet individual needs. Genetics doctoral scholars are trained in advanced rationales and methods of genetic analysis for careers as independent scientists and educators through basic and applied biomedical research.

Opportunities are available to study diverse areas of genetics including developmental processes, gene structure and regulation, genetic recombination and mutation, chromosome mechanics, evolution and population genetics, human disease, cancer genetics, immunogenetics, and other areas of modern genetics. Diverse systems including viruses, bacteria, blue-green algae, Arabidopsis, yeast, Tetrahymena, nematodes, Drosophila, mice, humans, and a variety of other plant and animal species are studied.
