  • What sort of housing is available and who do you contact for information?
    As a graduate student at the University, you may take advantage of the University's large pool of affordable and conveniently located housing in the Hyde Park community. More than 1,300 units in thirty-one apartment buildings are owned and operated by the University, offering wide variety in terms of location and cost as well as apartment sizes, designs, and rates. All units are within walking distance of the University's quadrangles and are on or near campus and/or public bus service both day and night. Both furnished and unfurnished units are available. Some buildings have limited off-street parking available at nominal rates.

  • What is parking like on campus?
    Parking on the street around the campus can be difficult. You can buy a parking permit for a campus lot on a space-available basis, and you will pay a monthly fee.
  • What can students do in their spare time?
    Graduate students at the University of Chicago have all the resources of the campus, the neighborhood, and the city at their disposal. On the university campus itself, several galleries and museums exhibit their own and loaned art collections; there is a year-round schedule of concerts and theater productions, regular performances by student dramatic and musical groups, appearances by local and nationally known bands, and a variety of other on-campus events. The neighborhood of Hyde Park offers parks, small shops and restaurants; only a few short blocks from anywhere in Hyde Park is the lakefront, with its beaches, picnic areas, jogging and bicycling paths. The city of Chicago is very exciting and diverse, famous for its superb architecture and beautiful parks. There are museums of every kind, dance, theater, and music venues, great professional sports, plus ethnic and cultural riches in food and shopping.
  • How convenient is shopping, dining out, going dancing?
    Hyde Park includes several shopping centers with basic amenities – grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. – as well as a range of specialty shops, bars, and restaurants. The downtown center, the Loop, is easily accessible by car, train, or bus from Hyde Park, as are the near north side entertainment areas and other sections of Greater Chicago.
  • Are their student associations for international or other students?
    There are many organizations and programs students can join on campus. Diverse organizations – for example, religious groups, multicultural groups, and women’s groups - provide a range of resources and support for students in our community.
  • What are the athletic facilities like? Is it expensive to use them?
    The campus’s $51 million Ratner Athletic Center is a 15,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art athletic and recreational facility. With its fitness center, gymnasiums, dance room, classrooms, 50-meter swimming pool, ball courts and more, it is designed to support the university’s various sports teams as well as the fitness needs of other users. Graduate students receive membership for free. During the academic year, the center is open from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and Sunday, and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Can students take courses from other departments in the university?
    With their program’s approval, graduate students who are fully registered may take any of the courses offered in the university at no additional cost.
